HIP Housing Highlights
HIP Housing has accomplished a great deal since it was founded in 1972.
Here are some of the highlights.
1979 1985 1986
Lois Almen and Joelle Perkocha hired. Home Sharing Program begins - 20 placements made.
HIP Housing receives "Best Practices Award" from the American Society on Aging; Group Share Program provides new affordable housing.
Reverse Mortgage counseling program begins; Almost 50% of Home Sharing matches are intergenerational.
1989 1991
HIP Housing begins developing properties: Pine-Middlefield House built in Redwood City designed for shared living. HIP certified as HUD home equity conversion agency. Single Parent Self-Sufficiency Program established through United Way grant.
State and city grants received to build Hilton Street House in Redwood City for low-income single parents.
1992 1995
Single parent program expands; Housing Association for the Needy and Dispossessed (HAND) founded. Robbins Nest completed; Cherry Street Apts. in San Carlos and Idaho Apts. in San Mateo acquired and rehabilitated. Media coverage on CNN for HIP's work in Home Equity Conversion Counseling.
1997 1999 2002
Housing Opportunity Program is initiated in collaboration with San Mateo County Human Service Agency. Home Sharing Program celebrates its 20th anniversary; a total of 10,200 persons matched since its inception. Self-Sufficiency Program receives one of six gold awards given by the San Mateo County Children's Report Initiative.
2004 2006 2008
HIP Housing's Self-Sufficiency Program is recognized by the California Assembly Committee of Human Services as one of the top seven welfare-to-work programs in the State. HIP Housing is inducted into the California Housing Consortium's Housing Hall of Fame. HUD provides HIP Housing with a $20,000 grant to expand its Home Equity Conversion Counseling Program.
