HIP Housing Happenings—Spring 2007
Thirty-five years ago, seven community social workers gathered to discuss the many needs of San Mateo County, the gaps in services, and what they could do to make a difference. It all began in 1972, with an anbitous dream and a three year grant of $9,000 per year from The San Francisco Foundation. The Human Investment Project emerged serving as a cataylst to meet the needs in the community. They began with community organizing for in-home care for seniors, started a 24 hour child abuse hotline, and a program for the blind. In 1979, HIP’s first Executive Director and Associate Director, Lois Almen Everett and Joelle Perkocha were hired. In 1980, they launched the Home Sharing Program in San Mateo County to serve seniors. In its first year it made 20 matches. Today, the Home Sharing Program matches over 300 individuals annually, and is open to people of all ages. Over the past 35 years, over 13,000 persons have benefitted from home sharing arrangements. The Home Sharing Program made HIP Housing aware of the growing need for affordable housing in the County, and launched HIP Housing into the affordable housing sector.
As the lack of affordable housing became a high priority in the County and affected more than the senior population; HIP expanded its programs to assist low-income single parents and the low-income population, including persons with disabilities. In 1986, the Home Equity Conversion program began, offering seniors third party reverse mortgage counseling. Then the Self-Sufficiency Program began in 1991, a program that provides single families with housing assistance and case management to help parents achieve educational goals and financial independence. To date, over 200 families (single and two parent households) have graduated from the Self-Sufficiency Program. To help a broader low-income population, in 1995 HIP expanded its Property Development portfolio by acquiring existing apartment complexes and rehabilitating them to add to the pool of affordable housing. HIP Housing manages eight properties, owns three shared houses, and recently acquired its tenth apartment complex. (See page 4.) HIP Housing has received a number of awards for its service to the community. Most recently, HIP Housing was honored with the Mayor’s Award from the City of San Mateo for helping those in need find a place to call home. Considered a leader in the area of affordable housing, HIP Housing’s work is making a difference in thousands of people’s lives. An ambitous dream that started 35 years ago and staffed solely by volunteers, is now a reality that has served over 35,000 individuals, staffed by 15 employees and governed by 20 board members. HIP Housing with your support, will continue to help those in need, find a place to call home.
HIP Housing creates a place to call home for over 1,000 people in San Mateo County every year
HIP Housing celebrates 35 years of service to the residents of San Mateo County. Incorporated in 1972 as the Human Investment Project, Inc. (HIP), the agency began by addressing the needs of seniors, including home health care and nursing home issues. Gradually HIP Housing, in response to the powerful need, evolved into an organization dedicated to providing solutions to the pressing need for affordable housing. In 1999, ‘Housing’ was officially added to the name to create HIP Housing. Today, 35 years into the effort, HIP Housing annually serves over 2,500 adults and children and directly helps over 1,000 people each year to find “a place to call home.”
In the broadest sense our goal is that everyone who grows up in San Mateo County will be able to find affordable housing here as adults, that every senior who retires will be able to “age in place” in the County, and that everyone who works in the community will be able to live in San Mateo County near where they work.
We offer four innovative programs which are key components to moving our dream to a reality. And as we move forward toward our 36th, 40th and 50th anniversaries and beyond, “we need your help.” You can make a difference by sharing your home or volunteering your time or by making a financial contribution. Please join or rejoin in this worthy cause.
The best way to get started is to participate in our 35th Anniversary Celebration on June 21st at Hotel Sofitel in Redwood City. Jackie Speier will be our Mistress of Ceremonies, John King of the San Francisco Chronicle will be our guest speaker, and Mike Nevin will be the Auctioneer. We will acknowledge our collective accomplishments, honor successful clients, share our future vision, and to renew our commitment and energy. Come join us as we celebrate “our” success!

Last holiday season Anissa (right) participated in HIP Housing’s Adopt A Family program. The program matches HIP Housing’s families with a sponsor who purchases gifts for the family, gifts that they would otherwise not receive. Below is a thank you from Anissa written to her adopter, the Employees of Gap.
Dear Gap Employees,
I want to thank you for your overwhelming kindness. I was sincerely moved and shocked with the generosity your company has shown to my son and I. Seriously...I really did almost start crying. It has been a difficult year, but with your help you allowed me to give my son a real Christmas and it allowed me to stop thinking about all the problems and simply enjoy my son...
I also must mention that you getting me not just one pair of shoes but TWO was unexpected and I am so grateful. It gets challenging with a two year old to think about yourself and I appreciate you truly thinking about the two of us during the Holiday season...
Anissa and Nathaniel
The Home Sharing Program is a one-on-one service linking people who have a home to share with those seeking a home. Each person has a private room and shares common living areas.
The Self-Sufficiency Program enables low-income families to transition from government assistance. Participants receive subsidized rents or a housing scholarship while they complete an education or job training program and find employment with an adequate income to support their families.
The Home Equity Conversion Program provides objective information and counseling on ways seniors can turn their accumulated home value into spendable cash so they can remain independent in their homes.
Through Property Development, HIP Housing expands the pool of affordable housing for low-income persons and families in San Mateo County by developing new and acquiring and rehabilitating existing housing.
Anissa Malady, a Self-Sufficiency client was honored with the Women’s Opportunity Award and the Angela Dunn Adventure Award from the Soroptimist International - San Mateo, Burlingame, Mid-Peninsula. As a survivor of domestic violence, Anissa was able to overcome obstacles to accomplish her educational goals. After entering HIP Housing’s Self-Sufficiency Program, Anissa found a permanent home, completed her AA in Library Technology at City College and is currently enrolled in San Francisco State University working towards her Bachelors in Art History. The Soroptimist’s Women’s Opportunity Award acknowledged Anissa with a $1,000 grant. The Angela Dunn Adventure Award is a vacation grant that allows Anissa to take her 2 year old son on a special vacation.
HIP Housing’s Home Sharing South County Counselor, Barbara Liedtke, was inducted into the San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame for her long-standing advocacy work in affordable housing particularly in Southern San Mateo County. Barbara has been a dedicated employee of HIP Housing’s for 16 years. Master of Ceremonies, KGO Reporter David Louie, presented her with the award.
With the help of the City of South San Francisco and the County of San Mateo, HIP Housing acquires its tenth apartment complex. The 15 unit property, located in South San Francisco, will add to the pool of affordable housing in San Mateo County. Rehabilitation will begin in the coming fiscal year.
In November, HIP Housing was honored by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Golden Gate Chapter, with the Vineyards Award for its work in helping people in need. Bruce Hamilton, Executive Director (center) accepts award from Sean Sullivan (left) and Eric McDonnell (right), Co-chairs of the AFP committee.

Financial Title employee and SAMCAR member, Kathie Monozon, volunteers at the Holiday Store. Kathie is a longtime volunteer and donor of the Holiday Store. Nearly 100 children in HIP Housing’s programs were able to purchase gifts for their loved ones. Financial Title and SAMCAR are among the local businesses that held gift drives for this event.
Stanford students known as the Pi Tau Consulting Group, worked with HIP Housing on a targeted marketing campaign designed to recruit more providers of shared housing, particularly “young professional” clientele, for its Home Sharing Progam.
