Anne and her daughter were sleeping on a friend's couch
prior to applying to HIP Housing's Self-Sufficiency Program. She had become homeless after
leaving an unhealthy family situation plagued with alcoholism and drug dependency.
Determined to provide a healthy environment for her 2-year-old daughter, Anne sought
assistance from HIP Housing.
After moving into one of the Self-Sufficiency Program's shared living residences, she
was able to provide a stable and nurturing environment for her daughter. Anne recently
graduated from the College of San Mateo with an AA in Administration of Justice and
certificates in Human Services and Family Development. Before graduation, she was
also able to secure a position with the Human Services Agency of San Mateo County,
as a Benefits Analyst with starting pay of $19.27 per hour. Anne was recognized with
a Success Award in the client category given by the San Mateo County Department of
Human Services. Anne and her daughter have never been happier!

When Timo came to apply for HIP Housing's Self-Sufficiency Program,
he was at a critical point in his life. Timo was getting full, physical custody of his
8 and 9 year old daughters from Hawaii, but they could not all live in the small studio he
was renting. He could not afford to move into a bigger place because he was attending school
full-time to receive a certification in Cisco Network Academy at OICW (Opportunities for
Industrialization Center-West) and did not have a job. Fortunately, the housing scholarship
he received from the Self-Sufficiency Program enabled Timo to rent a two-bedroom apartment
and continue his schooling. With the help of HIP Housing he was able to complete his
certificate, obtain a full-time - permanent job with benefits, and maintain their home with
his daughters. He waited for a long time to have the girls and he is proud to be able to
provide a safe and healthy home environment for them independently.
